The Mandalorian: Episode Two

The Mandalorian is a new series from Disney set in the Star Wars universe, available exclusively with a subscription to Disney Plus, the new streaming service from Disney that launched on 11/12/19. Please see my impressions of Episode One here.

If you don't want to be spoiled in any possible way: there are some pretty significant spoilers herein. You've been warned!

I read a review of the second episode where the author was positively shocked, SHOCKED, that The Mandalorian was going to be "about that," as in, about a reluctant father thrust into the role of caregiver and not quite knowing what to do (and almost failing utterly to boot). I mean, I knew nerds were dense, but come on.

Episode Two of The Mandalorian picks up right where the first one left off, with our hero now with a baby (referred to in the show as "The Child") in tow. He almost immediately forgets he's responsible for another life and goes off to fight some Jawas on a moving Sandcrawler because they stole his property. If not for a seemingly sentient baby carriage, he would have lost The Child entirely and resigned it to a fate of being eaten by Tusken Raiders or something.

After getting his ass handed to him by the Jawas, The Mandalorian meets back up with the Ugnaught moisture farmer and hatches a plan to get his stuff back. As it turns out, the Jawas want him to retrieve an Egg for them, which is of course guarded by a gnarly beast who nearly hands The Mandalorian's ass to him for a second time in as many hours. But! The Child has something up its sleeves and manages to distract the space-rhino for long enough so that The Mandalorian can deliver the killing blow, gather up the Egg, and trade it to the Jawas for the parts of his ship they stole.

With that, The Mandalorian puts his ship back together, bids farewell to the Ugnaught, and takes off with The Child.

The episode was a tightly paced 30 minutes and felt over way too soon, but that's not a bad thing. We got more Mandalorian badassery (although there was just as much of him getting his ass kicked), we got more of that great recognizable but somehow brand new score, and we got to see some Force power in action. Plus, Jawas!

Dunno if nerds are still on board at this point, but frankly, I don't care. The Mandalorian is the Star Wars serial I didn't know I needed, and I am very much looking forward to next Friday's new episode.

What do you think of The Mandalorian so far? Let me know by posting a comment, and as always, have a great day!
